michael's round the world adventure
A special word here about my ongoing efforts to raise money for a couple of really worthy charities, and also about opportunities for personal sponsorship to assist with the significant cost associated with this venture.
In 2002 I had an epileptic seizure. This was quite a scary event, particularly I think for those around me. I wasn't aware of anything during, or immediately after, the seizure. Since then, I have had another two seizures. I'm quite lucky, in that I have been able to manage the condition such that it does not have a significant impact on my daily life. I'm also lucky that I get a warning - an "aura" - of an imminent seizure. In the case of the race, this means I will have enough time to make my way to safety prior to a seizure, which was key to convincing the race organisers to allow me take part.
For the many people in the UK and Ireland who are more severely affected by epilepsy, charities like Epilepsy Action in the UK, and Brainwave in Ireland, provide essential support to people who suffer from epilepsy, and to their carers. Both charities have regional support offices, as well as support groups and information phonelines for all those who are impacted by epilepsy. They also support research into the causes, cures for, and management of epilepsy.
